Markup Worksheet/Game Quiz/Worksheet
Welcome to Markup Worksheet/Game. This game is a simulation designed to help you master mental math for everyday transactions. In this game, your job is to find the original price before the discount or the markup. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to play the Markup Worksheet/Game

  1. Choose Your Audit Mode
From the main menu, you have three departments to choose from:
Discounts: You see a cheap sale price. You must find out how expensive it was originally.
Markups: You see a price that has been increased (like adding tax). You must find the base cost.
Mixed: Every round swaps between a discount and a markup.

  2. Identify the “Adjustment”
Once the game starts, look at the Adjusted Price card. It tells you two things:
The Current Price: This is the “New Price."
The Context: Was it a percentage Discount or a Markup?

  3. Apply the Reverse Formula
You must work backward. You cannot simply multiply the new price by the percentage. You must divide the price by the Total Percentage it represents.
    For Discounts (Subtract from 100%)
If an item is 25% OFF, you are looking at 75% of the original price.
    Formula: \(Original = \frac{New Price}{0.75}\)
Mental Shortcut: Multiplying by the reciprocal \(\frac{4}{3}\) is often faster.
    For Markups (Add to 100%)
If an item has a 20% Markup, you are looking at 120% of the original price.
    Formula:\(Original = \frac{New Price}{1.20}\)
Mental Shortcut: Flip the fraction \(\frac{6}{5}\) to multiply by \(\frac{5}{6}\).

  4. Gameplay Mechanics
The Input: Type your answer in the box. You don’t need the “$” sign.
The Streak: Every correct audit increases your Streak.
The Shake: If you enter the wrong price, the screen will shake, and your streak resets to zero. The game will show you the correct answer so you can learn for the next round.

Reciprocal Cheat Sheet (Discount)

If the Discount is… You pay this Fraction… Multiply Sale Price by…
20% OFF \(\frac{4}{5}\) \(\times \frac{5}{4}\)
$25% OFF \(\frac{3}{4}\) \(\times \frac{4}{3}\)
$50% OFF \(\frac{1}{2}\) × 2
$75% OFF \(\frac{1}{4}\) × 4

Reciprocal Cheat Sheet (Markup)

If the Markup was… The Total Fraction is… Multiply Final Price by…
10% Markup \(\frac{11}{10}\) \(\times \frac{10}{11}\)
$20% Markup \(\frac{6}{5}\) \(\times \frac{5}{6}\)
25% Markup \(\frac{5}{4}\) \(\times \frac{4}{5}\)
50% Markup \(\frac{3}{2}\) \(\times \frac{2}{3}\)
100% Markup \(\frac{2}{1}\) \(\times \frac{1}{2}\)
