Make Teen Numbers Worksheet/Game
Welcome to the Make Teen Numbers Challenge! Mastering “teen” numbers is a foundational step in understanding place value. This interactive tool helps learners visualize that every number from 11 to 19 is simply a combination of one full “ten” and a specific amount of “ones.” By using ten-frames, the game moves math from abstract symbols into clear, countable patterns, building the mental models necessary for more complex addition and subtraction later on. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to Play
Count the Frames
At the top of the screen, you will see two ten-frames.
The Amber Frame (Left): This represents the number 10. It is always full.
The Purple Frame (Right): This represents the Ones. Count how many purple dots you see to find the second part of your equation.
Build the Equation
Use your keyboard to fill in the two missing pieces of the puzzle:
The First Box (?): Type the number of purple dots you counted.
The Second Box (??): Type the total sum (10 + your purple dots).
Validate Your Work
Click the VALIDATE button or press Enter.
Success: If both numbers are correct, you’ll hear a sparkling chime and the boxes will turn green.
Try Again: If something is off, the boxes will turn red and you’ll hear a low tone. Re-count the purple dots and check your addition.

Pro Tip: Subitizing
Try to “see” the number of purple dots without counting them one by one. If the top row is full, that’s 5. If only one spot is empty in the whole frame, that’s 9. This skill—called subitizing—will help you become a fast mathematician.
