Make Figures with a Given Area Worksheet/Game
Welcome to the Make Figures with a Given Area Challenge! This game asks you to create a figure to meet a given area. It’s a fantastic way to develop spatial reasoning and understand that area is a measurement of surface coverage, regardless of the shape’s final form. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to Play
Your objective is to construct a single, solid figure that exactly matches the target area provided.
Check the Target: Look at the Target Area box. This number tells you exactly how many unit squares your shape must contain.
Build Your Shape: Click on the individual cells in the 5x5 grid to fill them with color. Each clicked square represents 1 square unit or unit².
Follow the Connection Rule: To count as a single valid figure, all your filled squares must be connected. This means every square must touch at least one other square along a flat side (top, bottom, left, or right). Squares touching only at the corners do not count as connected.
Validate Your Work: Once you believe your shape is the correct size and fully connected, click Validate Shape.
Success: If the area is perfect and the shape is connected, you’ll earn a “Perfect Construction” message and increase your streak.
Keep Trying: If the count is off or your squares are disconnected, the game will give you a hint so you can adjust your design.
Reset if Needed: If you want to start your design over, just hit the Reset button to clear the grid.
Why This Works
This game teaches Area Conservation. Students often think that a shape’s area changes if its appearance changes. By building their own figures, they see firsthand that an area of 10 can look like a long skinny line or a compact block, but the “size” of the surface remains exactly 10 units.
