Every single problem in this game is built on a foundational algebraic concept: the linear relationship.
y = mx + b
When reading the word problems, the game teaches students to look for two main structural anchors:
The Starting Value / Constant (b):
This is a fixed amount that only happens once. In the game’s scenarios, this looks like a flat registration fee ($60), a starting water volume (1,200 gallons), or a flat ride-share base fare ($3.50).
The Rate of Change / Slope (m):
This is the value that repeats or scales depending on the variable (x). It often includes keywords like “per hour,” “each week,” or “per mile.” If a value is accumulating (like saving $25 a week), the slope is positive (+25x).
If a value is decreasing or draining (like a candle burning down at 0.8 inches per hour), the slope is negative (-0.8x).
Putting It into Action (An Example from the Game)
Scenario: A music streaming service charges a flat monthly fee of $10 plus $2 for every premium album download (a).
To find the total monthly cost (C), we translate the real-world facts right into our formula:
Our starting constant anchor (b) is the one-time monthly fee: 10
Our scaling rate (m) is the cost per download: 2a
