Structural Shortcuts for Perfect Recall
Rather than trying to memorize all six expressions independently, grouping them by their shared visual traits makes them much easier to learn:
The “Co-” Prefix Is Negative:
Just like regular trigonometric derivatives, any inverse function that begins with a “C” (arccos, arccot, arccsc) has a negative sign in its numerator. The other three remain strictly positive.
The Tangent Plus-Sign Pivot:
Tangent functions have absolutely no square root in their denominators. Because arctan(x) and arccot(x) have a “t” in their names, think of it as a plus sign (+) gluing the 1 and the x2 together: \(\frac{1}{1+x^2}\).
Radical Variable Placement:
Both Sine and Secant options require a square root, but the internal terms are flipped:
Arcsine (arcsin): Starts with a constant, 1 first (\(\sqrt{1-x^2}\)).
Arcsecant (arcsec): Starts with the variable, x first, and forces an extra absolute value barrier out front (\(\frac{1}{|x|\sqrt{x^2-1}}\)).
