Continuity & Intermediate Value Theorem (IVT) Game
Master calculus continuity, piecewise functions, and the Intermediate Value Theorem (IVT) with this interactive practice game. Features live scoring, audio feedback, and step-by-step solutions. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game

  1. Select Game Mode:
Practice Mode: Work through questions at your own pace without time limits to build conceptual mastery.
Challenge Mode: Answer as many questions as possible within a timed window to test fluency and recall.
  2. Read the Question:
Problems cover five key areas: IVT applicability, finding the value c guaranteed by IVT, piecewise function continuity, identifying discontinuity types, and sign-change root guarantees.
  3. Submit Your Answer:
Click your selected option for multiple-choice questions, or enter your exact value for numerical inputs.
Click Submit Answer (or press Enter).
  4. Receive Instant Feedback:
Correct Answer: A high-pitched chime plays, your streak increases, and the score increments (e.g., 1/1).
Incorrect Answer: A lower sound plays, and a complete Step-by-Step Solution appears instantly, showing the exact algebraic steps and calculus theorems used.
  5. Track Your Performance:
    Your score updates continuously as Correct / Attempted (e.g., 8 / 10).
Review accuracy percentages, streak counters, and topic breakdown badges to identify areas needing practice.

Educational Summary
This game reinforces foundational concepts in differential calculus, specifically Limits, Continuity, and Existence Theorems.

Core Learning Objectives
Definition of Continuity at a Point: Applying the three-part test for continuity:

  1. f(c) is defined.
  2. \(\lim_{x \to c} f(x)\) exists (\(\lim_{x \to c^-} f(x) = \lim_{x \to c^+} f(x)\)).
  3. \(\lim_{x \to c} f(x) = f(c)\).
Piecewise Continuity: Setting one-sided limits equal to solve for unknown constants (k or a) across piecewise boundaries.
Classification of Discontinuities: Distinguishing algebraically between Removable (holes), Jump (differing left/right limits), and Infinite (vertical asymptotes) discontinuities.
Intermediate Value Theorem (IVT) Hypotheses: Verifying that a function f(x) is continuous on the closed interval [a, b] before applying existence guarantees.
    Applying the IVT:
Target Value Existence: Confirming that if k lies between f(a) and f(b), there exists at least one c ∈ (a, b) such that f(c) = k.
Root Finding: Checking for sign changes (f(a) · f(b) < 0) to prove the existence of a real zero within an interval.

Teacher’s Guide
Target Audience & Course Alignment
Courses: AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, High School Honors Calculus, College Calculus I.
Grade Levels: 11th Grade – Undergraduate.
AP Calculus CED Alignment:
Topic 1.11: Defining Continuity at a Point
Topic 1.12: Confirming Continuity over a Domain
Topic 1.13: Removing Discontinuities
Topic 1.16: Working with the Intermediate Value Theorem (IVT)

Differentiated Instruction & Remediation
For Struggling Learners:Direct students to start with piecewise continuity problems. Have them practice setting Left Limit = Right Limit on paper before attempting IVT existence questions.
Remind students to always check hypotheses first: If the function is not continuous on [a,b], IVT cannot be applied. For Advanced Learners:
Require students to explain why a given answer option is a distractor (e.g., explaining why a point c calculated falls outside the domain interval (a,b)).
Challenge students to create their own piecewise functions with removable discontinuities and test them against peers.
