Identify Coin Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Identify Coin Worksheet/Game. This game is designed to help students master the visual identification of common US currency: penny, nickel, dime, quarter. It includes specific labels for their values. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to play the Identify Coin Worksheet/Game

  1. Start Your Mission
Click the “Start Sorting” button on the main menu.

  2. The Investigation
A high-resolution image of a single coin will appear in the central display.
The Twist: The game randomly alternates between the “Heads” (obverse) and “Tails” (reverse) sides of the coin.
The Clue: A blue label at the bottom of the coin display confirms which side the student is currently viewing to help them build a complete mental map of the currency.

  3. Making the Identification
Four choice buttons appear at the bottom. Each button includes:
The Name: (e.g., Penny, Nickel, Dime, Quarter).
The Value: (e.g., 1 cent, 5 cents) to reinforce the numerical worth alongside the visual profile.

  4. Feedback & Progression
Correct Match: The button turns green, and a voiceover confirms the identity and value. The next level loads automatically after 3 seconds.
Incorrect Match: The button fades out, and the student is encouraged to try again until they find the right answer.

Pedagogical Features
Audio Reinforcement: The game uses the Web Speech API to read out names and values, supporting auditory learners and early readers who may struggle with the text.
Visual Discrimination: By forcing students to look at both sides of the coin, it prevents them from relying on a single visual cue (like a specific president’s face) to identify the money.
Value Reinforcement: The inclusion of “1 cent,” “5 cents,” etc., on the buttons builds a foundation for future money-counting lessons.
