Educational Summary
Target Grade & Skill Focus
Grade Level: 3rd Grade (Suitable for advanced 2nd Grade readers & 3rd Grade intervention)
Core Subject: English Language Arts (ELA) — Multiple-Meaning Words, Vocabulary Expansion, Context Clues
Standards Alignment: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.4.A: Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content.
Pedagogical Benefits Explicit Context Clue Training: Homographs cannot be decoded by sound or spelling alone since both are identical. This game explicitly trains students to scan the rest of the sentence for critical context clues.
Dual-Meaning Exposure: Question items pair the target homograph’s correct meaning alongside its alternate homograph meaning as a distractor, directly targeting common student confusions (e.g., baseball bat vs. flying bat).
Auditory & Visual Accessibility: Web Speech API voice synthesis and custom web audio cues ensure that emerging readers and English Language Learners (ELL/ESL) can participate independently.
Low-Stakes Mastery Logic: Retry mechanics allow students to learn through process-of-elimination without fear of failure or harsh score deductions.
