Soft G and Hard G Rules

  1. The Soft G Rule
When the letter G is followed by E, I, or Y, it usually softens to make a Soft G sound, which sounds exactly like the letter J (/dʒ/).
Followed by E: Gem, Gel, Gentle, Page, Stage
Followed by I: Giant, Giraffe, Ginger, Engineer
Followed by Y: Gym, Gypsy, Gymnastics, Energy

  2. The Hard G Rule
When the letter G is followed by any other letter (A, O, U, or any consonant) or if it lands at the very end of a word, it stays a Hard G and makes a guttural /g/ sound (like a frog or a ticking engine).
Followed by A, O, U: Gate, Gas, Gold, Goat, Gum, Gulp
Followed by Consonants: Glass, Green, Glow, Great, Bagel
At the end of a word: Bag, Frog, Log, Big, Flag

The Soft G rule has several common exceptions:
Even though they are followed by an I or E, the following everyday words stubbornly keep their Hard G sound:
Get, Give, Gift, Girl, Tiger, Finger, Geese, Forgive
