How to Play Hard C vs Soft C Game
This interactive learning game is broken down into two main modes designed to help players listen to, compare, and identify the changing sounds of the letter ‘C’.

Option 1: Listen & Learn (Explore Mode)
This is a relaxed, zero-pressure training ground to hear the rules in action.

• The Interface: You will see a “Minimal Pair” (two words that look or sound similar but highlight the target sounds, such as Cat vs. Cent).
  
• What to do: Click on either word card to activate your device’s voice synthesis.
  
• The Goal: Listen to the contrast between the Hard C (which makes a crunchy /k/ sound like Cake) and the Soft C (which makes a smooth /s/ sound like City). Use the ◀ Prev and Next ▶ buttons to navigate through 10 distinct word pairs.
  

Option 2: Sound Challenge (Game Mode)
Ready to test your skills? This mode tests your listening accuracy across 10 randomized mystery words.
The Interface: A dashed box features a large speaker icon (🔊) with two choice buttons below: Hard C and Soft C.

Step-by-step Loop:

1. Click the Speaker Button to play the audio for the mystery word.
   
2. Decide if the ‘C’ sound you heard mimics a /k/ or an /s/.
   
3. Click your guess.
   

If you are correct, the button flashes green with a Correct! ✨ confirmation. Your score goes up.
If you miss it, the incorrect choice turns red, the correct choice turns green, and an explicit breakdown displays (e.g., ““Bacon” makes the Hard C sound.”).

Soft C and Hard C Rules
The rule for determining whether a “C” makes a hard or soft sound is quite reliable in English phonics with a few exceptions. It depends on the letter that comes immediately after the “C”.
Here is how it breaks down:

1. The Soft C Rule
   When the letter C is followed by E, I, or Y, it changes its sound to a Soft C and makes the /s/ sound (just like the letter S).
   Followed by E: Cent, Cell, Face, Rice, Dance
   Followed by I: City, Circle, Pencil, Cinema
   Followed by Y: Cycle, Cyclone, Spicy, Cylinder
   

2. The Hard C Rule
   When the letter C is followed by any other letter (A, O, U, or any consonant) or if it comes at the very end of a word, it keeps its Hard C sound and makes the /k/ sound (just like the letter K).
   Followed by A, O, U: Cat, Cake, Coat, Cone, Cup, Cube
   Followed by Consonants: Cry, Clock, Class, Act, Bacon
   At the end of a word: Picnic, Plastic, Magic, Fabric
   

A Fun Exception to Keep in Mind: Watch out for the word “Soccer”! Even though the second C is followed by an E, the first C “protects” it, keeping the whole blend hard: /sɒk-ər/.
