Welcome to Growing Patterns Worksheet/Game. This game involves spotting the mathematical “rule” behind a growing shape. Think of yourself as a pattern detective. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

 

 

How to play the Growing Patterns Game

1. Analyze the First Three Stages
   When the game starts, you will see three groups of blue blocks labeled Stage 1, 2, and 3.
   Stage 1 is your “base” (the starting point).
   Stage 2 and 3 show you how the pattern is expanding.
   

2. Find the “Growth Rule”
   To predict Stage 4, you need to figure out exactly how many blocks are being added each time.
   Count the difference: Subtract the number of blocks in Stage 1 from Stage 2.
   Example: If Stage 1 has 3 blocks and Stage 2 has 5 blocks, the rule is “+2 blocks."
   Verify: Check if Stage 3 follows that same rule. (In the example above, Stage 3 should have 7 blocks).
   

3. Calculate Stage 4
   Once you know the growth rule, apply it to the last visible stage:
   Look at the total number of blocks in Stage 3.
   Add the Growth Rule amount to that total.
   The result is your answer for Stage 4.
   
   Tip: In this game, patterns usually grow in one of two ways:
   Vertical Growth: A single column gets taller (e.g., 2, 4, 6…).
   Grid Growth: The shape gets wider and taller simultaneously.
   

4. Submit Your Guess
   Type your answer into the large blue box at the bottom.
   Click “Check Answer”.
   Green: You nailed the prediction.
   Red: There was a calculation error. Try re-counting the difference between stages.
   Click “New Pattern” to generate a completely different growth rule and keep practicing.
   

5. Manage Your Streak
   Check Answer: Enter your number and hit check.
   The Streak Badge: Every correct answer adds to your flame 🔥.
   The Reset: If you guess incorrectly, the input turns red and your streak resets to 0. You can keep trying the same pattern, but you won’t get your streak back until the next pattern.
   Next Pattern: This button only unlocks once you have successfully solved the current puzzle.
