Rules for GH sounds
The “F” Sound (/f/)
When “GH” makes an “F” sound, it almost always appears at the very end of a short word, usually right after the vowel combinations OU or AU.
Examples: Tough, Rough, Enough, Cough, Laugh, Draught (Draft)
The Cheat Code: If the word is short and ends in “-ugh”, think “F”.
Note: The vowel sound right before it usually gets shortened (e.g., “tough” sounds like tuff, “laugh” sounds like laff).
The Hard “G” Sound (/g/)
When “GH” is placed at the very beginning of a word, it completely drops any “H” behavior and is pronounced exactly like a regular, hard “G” (as in go or game).
Examples: Ghost, Ghetto, Ghastly, Gherkin, GhanaThe Cheat Code: If it starts the word, ignore the “H” entirely. It’s just a hard “G”.
The Silent “GH” (No Sound)
This is actually the most common behavior for “GH” in English. It goes completely silent in two specific positions:
Pattern A: Locked inside the “-IGHT” or “-EIGHT” cluster
When “GH” is trapped between a vowel and the letter T, it acts like a ghost—invisible to your ears. Instead of making a sound, its job is to force the vowel before it to say its own name (making it a “long” vowel).
Examples: Light, Night, Bright, Flight, Weight, Freight, Caught, Taught, Straight
The Hearing Test: In the word Light, you only hear L → Long I → T. The “GH” is completely skipped.
Pattern B: At the end of a Long Vowel word
If a word ends in “GH” but follows a long vowel sound (like oh or oo), it doesn’t transform into an “F”—it just goes completely quiet.
Examples: Though, High, Sigh, Dough, Through
