Welcome to Flats, Rods, & Units Worksheet/Game. This game is designed to help students visualize place value by predicting how a large pile of “ones” can be grouped into “tens” and “hundreds.” Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

 

 

How to play the Flats, Rods, & Units Worksheet/Game

1. Choose Your Level
   When you open the game, you’ll see two options:
   Rods & Units: Focuses on numbers up to 99. You will deal with Tens and Ones.
   Flats, Rods & Units: Focuses on larger numbers (up to 500). You will deal with Hundreds, Tens, and Ones.
   

2. The Problem
   A random number of small blue squares (units) will appear on the screen. The game will ask:
   “If you have [X] units…"
   

3. Prediction
   Your goal is look at the total number and break it down into the input boxes:
   Flats: How many groups of 100 can you make? (Look at the hundreds digit).
   Rods: How many groups of 10 are left? (Look at the tens digit).
   Leftovers: How many single units remain? (Look at the ones digit).
   

4. Check & Watch the Exchange
   Click “Check Exchange.” If you are correct, the game plays a happy chime and starts the animation:
   The messy units will vanish.
   They will be replaced by neatly organized Flats (large squares), Rods (tall bars), and single Units.
   This shows you exactly how your number is “built."
   

Tips for Teachers/Parents
· The Digit Trick: Teach the player that for a number like 342, the digits themselves are the answer: 3 flats, 4 rods, and 2 ones.
· Zero is a Number: If the number is 205, remind them that there are 0 rods. They should type “0” in the Rods box.
