Order Absolute Values & Integers Game
Practice substituting variables and simplifying absolute value expressions with this free interactive algebra game. Includes instant step-by-step solution feedback. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game

  1. Select a Difficulty Level:
Level 1 (Basic Single Absolute Value): Practice single variable substitutions inside basic absolute value bars (e.g., |x + 3| or 2|x| - y).
    Level 2 (Multi-Term Expressions): Solve expressions requiring multiple arithmetic steps and two-variable substitutions (e.g., |3x - 2| + y or 2|x - y| + 4).
Level 3 (Compound & Negated Absolute Values): Work with negated absolute terms, multiple absolute value groupings, and products (e.g., -|a - b| + |x|).
  2. Read the Problem: Look at the main display card to view the target mathematical expression and the assigned values for x and y.
  3. Substitute & Simplify:
Replace each variable in the expression with its given numerical value (pay close attention to negative signs). Evaluate the operations inside the absolute value bars first.
Take the absolute value (convert negative results inside the bars to positive).
Complete the remaining order of operations.
  4. Enter Your Answer: Use the on-screen keypad or physical keyboard to type your final calculated integer. Press the − key for negative answers.
  5. Submit & Review: Press Submit ✓ or hit Enter.
If correct, you’ll earn score points, build your streak counter, and see confetti.
If incorrect, review the step-by-step breakdown provided in the feedback card to pinpoint calculation errors.

Educational Summary
This interactive game reinforces middle school and early high school algebraic reasoning by bridging two critical topics: variable substitution and absolute value evaluation.

Target Audience: Grades 6–9 (Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1).
Core Mathematical Concepts:
Order of Operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS): Treating absolute value bars as grouping symbols that must be simplified internally before applying the absolute value transformation.
Absolute Value Definition: Understanding absolute value as distance from zero (|x| ≥ 0), and distinguishing between internal operations (e.g., |-5| = 5) and external negation (e.g., -|5| = -5).
Integer Arithmetic: Applying signed-number operations during variable substitution with negative numbers.

Pedagogical Benefits: The infinite problem generator prevents memorization, while immediate step-by-step diagnostic feedback reinforces self-correction without requiring constant direct instruction.

Teachers’ Guide
Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Alignment
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.EE.A.2.C: Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas used in real-world problems.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.1.C: Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse; understand absolute value as distance on a number line.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.SSE.A.1: Interpret expressions that represent a quantity in terms of its context.

Suggested Classroom Implementation

  1. Warm-Up / Bell Ringer (5–10 Minutes) Launch Level 1 on an interactive whiteboard or student devices to start class. Challenge students to achieve a class-wide 5-question streak without errors to activate prior knowledge of integer operations.
  2. Differentiated Station Rotations
Remediation Group (Level 1): Focus on single-variable substitution and recognizing that operations inside | \dots | must be completed prior to converting the result to positive.
Grade-Level Practice (Level 2): Have students write down their intermediate work on mini-whiteboards before typing answers into the game.
Extension / Acceleration (Level 3): Challenge advanced students with negated outer signs like -|a - b|, focusing on how negative signs outside absolute value bars affect final values.
