Nearest 10: Round two 2-digit numbers to the nearest 10, then add them together.
Nearest 100: Round two 3-digit numbers to the nearest 100, then find the estimated sum.
Estimation Detective: Compare the estimated sum against the exact sum and decide if the estimate is higher or lower.
Rounding Lab: Enter custom numbers and select rounding bases (10 or 100) to explore step-by-step breakdowns and comparisons with the exact total.
  2. Solve the Problem:
Enter the rounded value for the first number.
Enter the rounded value for the second number.
Enter the estimated sum (A + B ≈ Estimated Sum).

Educational Summary
Estimation Quest: Round & Add is an interactive web-based math game designed to build foundational skills in estimation, rounding, and mental addition.

Core Learning Objectives:
Apply rounding rules for rounding multi-digit whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
Understand the concept of estimation as a strategy for quick mental math and practical problem-solving.
Analyze the difference between exact and estimated values (underestimation vs. overestimation).

Target Audience: Elementary school students (Grades 2 to 4).
Key Features:
Scaffolded Progression: Moves from 2-digit rounding (nearest 10) to 3-digit rounding (nearest 100).
Conceptual Reasoning: “Estimation Detective” mode challenges students to evaluate whether rounding rounded up or down overall.
Exploration Lab: “Rounding Lab” sandbox mode allows students to test custom numbers to analyze differences between exact and estimated sums.

Teachers’ Guide
Suggested Lesson Plan Integration

  1. Warm-Up / Whole-Class Instruction (10 mins):
Open the Rounding Lab mode on a projector or smartboard.
Model rounding using the built-in tip: If the digit to the right is 5 or more, round up; if 4 or less, round down.
Key Discussion Question: “When we round 268 to 300 and 142 to 100, is our estimated sum (400) higher or lower than the exact sum (410)?"
  2. Guided & Independent Practice (15 mins):
Have students play Nearest 10 or Nearest 100 independently or in pairs.
Encourage students to fill out both rounding steps before calculating the final estimated sum to reinforce the two-step estimation procedure.
  3. Critical Thinking Extension (10 mins):
Transition students to Estimation Detective mode.
Challenge students to explain why an estimate is higher or lower based on whether the original numbers were rounded up or down.

Differentiation Strategies
Support: Use the Nearest 10 level and encourage students to focus on identifying the digit in the ones place before rounding.
Extension: Challenge students in Rounding Lab to find two numbers where the estimated sum equaled the exact sum, or where rounding created the largest possible difference.
