How to Play The Game
Objective:
Translate given geometric benchmarks (center location, axis orientation, and axis lengths) into a flawless standard-form ellipse equation vector.
Step 1:
Parse the Center Coordinates (h, k):
Look at the Center Node coordinates. Because standard ellipse equations use subtraction groupings—
\(\frac{(x-h)^2}{\dots} + \frac{(y-k)^2}{\dots} = 1\)
—you must flip the signs of your center values:
If a coordinate is positive, use a - sign in the input box.
If a coordinate is negative, use a + sign in the input box.
If a coordinate is 0, leave the sign box completely blank and enter 0 (or leave it blank).
Step 2:
Square the Semi-Axes lengths (a and b):
Square the given values for the major semi-axis (a) and minor semi-axis (b) to find a2 and b2.
Step 3:
Route the Denominators Based on Alignment:
Check the Major Axis Alignment to determine where to place your squared terms:
Horizontal Alignment: The ellipse stretches left-to-right. Place the larger squared value (a2) under the x-denominator slot and the smaller squared value (b2) under the y-denominator slot.
Vertical Alignment: The ellipse stretches up-and-down. Place the larger squared value (a2) under the y-denominator slot and the smaller squared value (b2) under the x-denominator slot.

The Underlying Mathematics
An ellipse is the geometric locus of points in a plane where the sum of the distances from two fixed internal focal points is perfectly constant.
The General Standard Form Equations
Depending on the direction the ellipse is stretched, it will follow one of two standard algebraic configurations:
Horizontal Major Axis:
\(\frac{(x - h)^2}{a^2} + \frac{(y - k)^2}{b^2} = 1\)
Vertical Major Axis:
\(\frac{(x - h)^2}{b^2} + \frac{(y - k)^2}{a^2} = 1\)
Fundamental Mathematical Rules
The Sizing Axiom (a > b): In the mathematical definition of an ellipse, the constant a always denotes the length of the semi-major axis (the longest radius from the center), while b denotes the semi-minor axis (the shortest radius from the center). Therefore:
a2 > b2
The Center Vector Translations: The values h and k represent translations away from the origin (0,0) along the Cartesian coordinate grid. Writing them as (x - h) and (y - k) means that an equation showing (x + 3)2 actually points to a coordinate center where h = -3.
Orientation Mapping: The orientation of the ellipse controls which coordinate direction absorbs the widest distortion. If the major axis matches the horizontal line path (x-axis direction), the larger value (a2) belongs under the x-component fraction. If it matches the vertical line path (y-axis direction), the larger value (a2) sits underneath the y-component fraction.
