How to Play
Analyze the Case File: A randomly generated dot plot will appear on the screen, complete with a scenario title (e.g., “Books Read Over Spring Break”) and numbered categories along the bottom axis.
Read the Inquiry: Below the graph, a specific question will ask you to find a piece of hidden data.
Lock in Your Answer: Use the multiple-choice grid to select the correct number based on your visual analysis of the graph.
Process the Feedback:
If you are correct, you earn 10 points and immediately advance to the next round.
If you make a mistake, the game pauses and a remedial overlay appears. This provides a clear, step-by-step explanation of exactly how to read the graph to find the right answer before you move on to the next case.
How the Math Works
The game’s engine focuses on three foundational concepts of statistical analysis and graph interpretation:
Frequency (Reading Specific Data Points): The horizontal line at the bottom represents the value or category, while each dot stacked vertically above it represents one instance of that value. To find the frequency of a specific number, you must locate that number on the bottom line and count the individual dots stacked directly in its column.
Mode (Identifying Trends): The mode is the value in a data set that appears most frequently. In a dot plot, this mathematical concept becomes highly visual: the mode is simply the number on the bottom axis that has the tallest stack of dots above it.
Total Sum (Aggregating Data): Because every single dot represents one individual observation (like one student surveyed, one pet owned, or one goal scored), finding the total sample size requires adding together the counts of all the columns. You must count every dot present on the entire graph to determine the total number of data points.
