Domain and Range Graphing Game
Master visual domain and range with interactive graph challenges. Practice using interval notation with open/closed endpoints, infinite rays, and asymptotes. Free educational math game for middle & high school. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game
Objective
Identify the correct Domain (x-values covered) and Range (y-values covered) for the displayed graph, expressing your answers in standard Interval Notation.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Choose Your Level:
Level 1 (Foundations): Continuous curves (lines, parabolas, semicircles) with clear open/closed endpoints.
Level 2 (Advanced Curves): Includes graphs extending to infinity (±∞), square root functions, and rational functions with vertical/horizontal asymptotes.
Level 3 (Mastery): A randomized mixture of Level 1 and Level 2 functions.
  2. Analyze the Graph:
Domain (x-axis): Look at how far left and right the graph extends.
Range (y-axis): Look at how far down and up the graph extends.
  3. Enter Your Answers:
Click the Domain or Range input field.
Use your physical keyboard or the Interval Notation Quick-Buttons below the inputs to enter brackets, parentheses, and infinity symbols:
[ or ] → Closed endpoint (includes the point)
( or ) → Open endpoint (excludes the point) or used next to infinity
-inf / inf → Negative and positive infinity (∞)
    U → Union symbol (∪) for split domains/ranges (e.g., rational functions)
  4. Submit & Review:
Click Submit Answer (or press Enter).
    Visual Feedback:
The Domain span is highlighted in Green along the x-axis.
The Range span is highlighted in Blue along the y-axis.
Review the step-by-step breakdown if your answer was incorrect, then click Next Question to continue.

Educational Summary
Core Concepts Taught
Graphical Representation of Sets: Understanding that a function’s domain represents all possible inputs (x-values) and the range represents all possible outputs (y-values).
Interval Notation Mechanics:
Distinguishing between inclusive endpoints (closed circles / brackets [ ]) and exclusive endpoints (open circles / parentheses ( )).
Expressing unbounded behavior using infinity notation (-∞, ∞).
Expressing discontinuous domains using the union symbol (∪).
Asymptotic Behavior: Recognizing vertical and horizontal asymptotes and understanding how they create boundaries in domain and range.

Target Standards Alignment
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.IF.A.1: Understand that a function assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.IF.B.5: Relate the domain of a function to its graph and, where applicable, to the quantitative relationship it describes.

Teacher’s Guide & Classroom Integration
Suggested Class Activities

  1. Warm-Up / Bell Ringer (5–10 Minutes)
Project Level 1 onto the whiteboard.
Have students work in pairs to write down the domain and range on mini-whiteboards before revealing the visual solution on screen.
  2. Differentiated Learning Center
Tier 1 (Support): Direct students to start on Level 1. Encourage them to trace physical fingers along the x-axis (left to right) for domain and y-axis (bottom to top) for range.
Tier 2 (Core): Have students complete 10 questions on Level 2, focusing on identifying asymptote boundaries.
Tier 3 (Extension): Challenge advanced students to complete Level 3 aiming for a 90%+ accuracy rate on 20 consecutive attempts.
  3. Misconception Spot-Checks (Common Pitfalls to Address)
    Common Student Errors:
  4. Order Inversion: Writing (max, min) instead of (min, max). Remind students to always read Left to Right for Domain and Bottom to Top for Range.
  5. Parentheses vs. Brackets at Infinity: Students often accidentally write [-∞, ∞]. Remind them that infinity is a direction, not a fixed number, so it always receives a rounded parenthesis (.
  6. Confusing x and y Values at Endpoints: Ensure students read the x-coordinates for Domain and y-coordinates for Range.
