How to Play Kindergarten Dolch Sight Word Flashcards
This game is designed to be incredibly simple and distraction-free, making it perfect for young learners to use independently or alongside a parent or teacher.

Step 1: Look at the Word
When the game loads, a large, bold sight word will appear in the center of the whiteboard card. Encourage your child to look closely at the letters.

Step 2: Listen to the Word
Tap the blue Speaker Button (🔊) right below the word. The game will clearly read the word aloud using a friendly, slow pace tailored specifically for early language learners. Have your child repeat the word after they hear it!

Step 3: Turn the Page
Once they have practiced the word:
Tap the Next button to move to the next card in the deck.
If they want to review a word they just saw, tap the Back button.

Step 4: Mix It Up!
Learning words in the exact same order can sometimes lead to memorizing the sequence instead of the actual words.
Tap the Shuffle Deck button at any time to mix up all 52 cards in a completely random order for a brand-new practice session!

Daily Practice: Just 5 to 10 minutes of daily practice can dramatically improve sight word recognition.

Why are Kindergarten Dolch Sight Words useful for learners?

1. High Frequency (The “80/20 Rule” of Reading)
   Dolch Sight Words represent the most frequently used words in the English language. In typical children’s books, school materials, and library books, up to 50% to 75% of all words are sight words (such as the, to, and, he, was, of). By learning these 52 words, a child can instantly recognize more than half of the words on any given page of a kindergarten-level book.
   

The 52 words are:
“all”, “am”, “are”, “at”, “ate”, “be”, “black”, “brown”, “but”, “came”,
“did”, “do”, “eat”, “four”, “get”, “good”, “have”, “he”, “into”, “like”,
“must”, “new”, “no”, “now”, “on”, “our”, “out”, “please”, “pretty”, “ran”,
“ride”, “saw”, “say”, “she”, “so”, “soon”, “that”, “there”, “they”, “this”,
“too”, “under”, “want”, “was”, “well”, “went”, “what”, “white”, “who”, “will”,
“with”, “yes”

2. Many are “Phonetically Irregular” (Tricky Words)
   Phonics is excellent for decoding words like cat or run, but many Dolch words do not follow standard phonetic rules. For example:
   “was” sounds like /wuz/
   “said” sounds like /sed/
   “they” has a long /a/ sound at the end instead of the typical /ey/ sound.
   If a child tries to sound these words out phonetically, they will get confused and frustrated. Learning them “by sight” bypasses this spelling confusion entirely.
   

3. Transitioning to Cognitive Fluency
   When a child has to sound out every single letter in a sentence (e.g., t-h-e… c-a-t… w-a-s… o-n… t-h-e… s-t-a-i-r-s), their brain is working so hard on decoding that they completely lose track of what the story is about.
   Instantly recognizing sight words frees up their “cognitive bandwidth."
   Instead of focusing on how to read, they can focus on what they are reading, which drastically improves reading comprehension.
   

4. Preventing the “Reading Wall” (Building Confidence)
   One of the biggest hurdles for early readers is frustration. If a child stops at every word, they quickly grow tired and may decide they “hate reading.” Instantly recognizing words like play, look, she, and we gives them immediate wins on every line, building the confidence they need to tackle harder, phonetically decodable words.
