Divide Polynomials Game/Worksheet
Welcome to the Divide Polynomials Challenge! This interactive web game challenges you divide a quadratic expression (the dividend) by a linear binomial (the divisor). You can either use long division or synthetic division. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.


 


 

How to Play

  1. Analyze the Challenge:
    At the top of the screen, you will see a fraction called the Active Rational Expression. The top part is a quadratic equation (e.g., 2x2 + x - 10) and the bottom part is your linear divisor (e.g., x - 2).

  2. Calculate Your Answers:
    Your mission is to divide the top by the bottom. This will yield two distinct parts:
    Quotient Q(x): The primary resulting linear expression (e.g., 2x+5).
    Remainder R: The leftover whole number (e.g., 0 if it divides perfectly, or an integer like -3).

  3. Submit and Format:
    Type your findings into the respective input boxes.
    Tip: Type expressions naturally without spaces (e.g., 3x-1). If the remainder is zero, you must explicitly type 0.

  4. Use Your Toolkit:
    Stood up against a tough equation? Hit Request Hint to get a tactical breakdown of the current root, or scribble down patterns directly on the Digital Scratchpad.

  5. Verify and Advance:
    Click Verify Division. The game engine automatically checks your math regardless of what order you typed your terms in. Correct answers net you 25 points and fuel your win streak!

How the Math Works

  1. The Core Identity
    Every problem generated by the game relies on the core division algorithm structure:

\(\frac{\text{Dividend}}{\text{Divisor}} = \text{Quotient} + \frac{\text{Remainder}}{\text{Divisor}}\)

Which can be rewritten as a multiplication identity:

\(\text{Dividend} = (\text{Quotient} \times \text{Divisor}) + \text{Remainder}\)

  1. Solving via Synthetic Division
    While you can use classic long division, the game’s structure is hint optimized for Synthetic Division, which is a mental shortcut for dividing by (x - r).

Here is how the game logic calculates the steps seamlessly:
The Root:
If dividing by (x - 2), the root is 2. If dividing by (x + 3), the root is -3.
Step 1:
The leading coefficient of the dividend drops straight down. This instantly gives you the first half of your quotient (q1).
Step 2:
Multiply that dropped value by your root, add it to the dividend’s middle x-coefficient, and the result yields the constant term of your quotient (q0).
Step 3:
Multiply that new constant by your root, add it to the dividend’s final constant number, and the resulting balance reveals your final Remainder (R).
