Divide Function Game
This game will require you to divide two functions and provide the resulting expression. You will be required to factor the numerator which allows one of the factor to cancel with the denominator. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.

How to Play the Divide Function Game

  1. The Core Objective
The game presents you with an operation: (f / g)(x)
In this game, the top expression is always designed to be factorable into two parts, one of which will perfectly match (and cancel out) the bottom expression.

  2. How to Solve
To find the answer, you need to factor the quadratic trinomial.
Look at f(x): Find two numbers that multiply to the last number (constant) and add to the middle number (coefficient of x).
Match with g(x): One of those factors will be the same as g(x). Cancel the common factor from the numerator and denominator.
The other factor left behind is your answer.

Walkthrough Example:
f(x) = x2 + x - 6
g(x) = x - 2
Step A:
Factor x2 + x - 6. We need two numbers that multiply to -6 and add to +1.
Those numbers are +3 and -2.So, f(x) = (x + 3)(x - 2).

Step B:
Set up the division:\(\frac{(x + 3)(x - 2)}{(x - 2)}\)

Step C:
Cancel the (x - 2) from the top and bottom.
Your Answer: x + 3
