Divide Decimals by Shifting the Decimal Point Worksheet/Game
Welcome to the Divide Decimals by Shifting the Decimal Point Challenge! This is an interactive game to help you learn to master the counter-intuitive behaviors of dividing decimals: understanding how dividing by whole numbers (10 or 100) shifts the decimal point to the left to scale values down, while dividing by fractional decimals (0.1 or 0.01) shifts it to the right to scale values up. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play
Step 1: Choose Your Mode
From the main menu, select one of three diving modes to test your mental math tracking:

  1. Divide by 10 or 100: Focuses on shifting the decimal point to the left to make numbers smaller.
  2. Divide by 0.1 or 0.01: Focuses on shifting the decimal point to the right to scale numbers up.
  3. Deep Sea Mixed Challenge: An unpredictable mix of both left and right decimal drifts to test true place-value mastery.

Step 2: Read the Depth Equation
Once your dive begins, a math problem will appear in the main display box (for example: 4.5 ÷ 10 = ? or 0.32 ÷ 0.01 = ?). Your goal is to figure out the final position of the decimal point.

Step 3: Submit Your Answer
Evaluate the four potential options shown in the grid below the equation. Click on the button that shows the correct placement of the decimal point. Take your time to calculate the shift, as there is no active countdown timer.

Step 4: Analyze Feedback and Descend
Correct Answers: The chosen button turns green, a high-pitched success tone plays, and your score updates.
Incorrect Answers: The chosen button turns red, a low mistake tone plays, and the correct choice flashes in green.
Scaffolded Explanation: A dedicated Lesson Node appears instantly at the bottom of the screen, explaining exactly how many places and in what direction the decimal point needed to travel.

To divide decimals by 10, 100, 0.1, or 0.01, you shift the decimal point a specific number of places depending on whether you are dividing by a whole power of ten or a decimal power of ten.

  1. Dividing by 10 or 100
When dividing by 10 or 100, the number becomes smaller. You move the decimal point to the left based on the number of zeros in the divisor.
Divide by 10 (1 zero): Move the decimal point 1 place to the left.
    Example: 45.6 ÷ 10 = 4.56
Divide by 100 (2 zeros): Move the decimal point 2 places to the left.
    Example: 45.6 ÷ 100 = 0.456 (Add a leading zero if needed)

  2. Dividing by 0.1 or 0.01
When dividing by 0.1 or 0.01, the number actually becomes larger. This is because dividing by a decimal less than 1 is equivalent to multiplying by its reciprocal. You move the decimal point to the right based on the number of decimal places in the divisor.
Divide by 0.1 (1 decimal place): Move the decimal point 1 place to the right (same as multiplying by 10).
    Example: 45.6 ÷ 0.1 = 456
Divide by 0.01 (2 decimal places): Move the decimal point 2 places to the right (same as multiplying by 100).
    Example: 4.56 ÷ 0.01 = 456

Placeholder Zeros: If you run out of digits while moving the decimal point, add zeros to fill the gaps. For example, 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05.
