Defining vs. Non-Defining Attributes Game
Practice identifying 2D shape properties with this interactive 1st grade math game! Teaches defining attributes (sides, vertices, closed shapes) vs. non-defining traits (color, size, orientation). Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game
Objective
Analyze a featured shape and statement to determine whether the described feature is a Defining Attribute (a rule mandatory for the shape’s identity) or a Non-Defining Attribute (a visual detail that can change).

  1. Inspect the Evidence: Look at the visual shape box and read the attribute card prompt (e.g., “Is bright yellow” or “Has 4 straight sides and 4 square corners”).
  2. Classify the Feature:
Tap “Defining”: If the shape must have this feature to keep its geometric name (e.g., number of sides, vertices, or being a closed figure).
Tap “Non-Defining”: If the feature is just a cosmetic or positional variation (e.g., color, size, rotation, or line thickness).
  3. Analyze Detective Clues: If your answer is incorrect, read the immediate Detective Clue Breakdown pop-up to review the geometric rule before advancing to the next inspection.
  4. Complete the 10-Question Case: Aim for a 100% accuracy score to become a certified Attribute Detective!

Educational Summary
Pedagogical Focus: Defining vs. Non-Defining Geometric Properties
In 1st grade, standard math curricula transition students from informal shape recognition (“it looks like a party hat”) to formal rule-based geometric reasoning (“it has 3 straight sides and is closed”).
Attribute Detective directly builds this conceptual framework by contrasting essential geometric properties against superficial visual variations.

Core Learning Objectives
Attribute Discrimination: Distinguish between attributes that determine a shape’s category versus non-essential traits.
Geometric Vocabulary: Use precise terms such as vertices, straight sides, square corners, closed shapes, and orientation.
Spatial Invariance: Recognize that rotating, resizing, or recoloring a shape does not alter its mathematical classification.

Educational Standards Alignment
Common Core Math 1.G.A.1: Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.

Teacher’s Guide
Classroom Implementation Strategies

  1. Smartboard Anchor Chart Intro
Project the game on an interactive board before student independent time.
Before clicking an answer, ask the class: “If I paint this triangle green, is it still a triangle? If I erase one of its sides, is it still a triangle?” Use these questions to anchor the concepts of non-defining vs. defining.
  2. Geometry Center Rotation
Set up tablets or computers with the game at a math workstation.
Provide physical pattern blocks or cut-out shapes at the station. Have students rotate physical shapes on their desks whenever an orientation prompt appears on screen to reinforce spatial invariance hands-on.
  3. Keyboard Accessibility for Whole-Class Voting
Use keyboard shortcuts (Key 1 / Left Arrow for Defining, Key 2 / Right Arrow for Non-Defining) on a classroom computer for quick whole-group response voting during warm-ups.

Reflection & Discussion Questions
Use these questions during lesson wrap-ups or math journal prompts:

  1. “What are two things about a square that NEVER change, no matter how big or small it gets?"
  2. “If someone tells you they drew a shape with 4 straight sides, do you know for sure if it’s a square? What else do you need to check?"
  3. “Why is being ‘closed’ a defining attribute for all 2D shapes?"
