Counting On Number Line Game
Help early learners master the “counting on” addition strategy with Hopper the Frog on an interactive number line. Free visual math game for Kindergarten and 1st Grade! Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game
Objective
Help Hopper the Frog hop forward along the number line to find the correct landing number or missing hop distance!

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Read the Challenge: Check the top card to see where Hopper starts and how many steps to count on (e.g., “Start at 7 and hop 4 steps forward!”).
  2. Hop Forward: Click the green “Hop +1” button to make Hopper jump forward along the number line one step at a time. Watch the curved arc arrows and +1 badges appear over each hop.
  3. Check Your Landing Spot: Watch where Hopper lands on the number line and check the updated equation box (7 + 4 = ?).
  4. Submit Your Answer: Click “Check Answer ✨” to verify your solution.
If correct, you will earn points, build a streak, and trigger a celebration chime and confetti burst!
If incorrect, review the step-by-step breakdown explaining how to count on from the starting number.
  5. Advance & Reset: Click “Next Problem ➔” to tackle the next question, or use the “🔄 Reset” button if you want to restart Hopper’s position.

Educational Summary
Overview & Core Concepts
“Counting On” is one of the most critical foundational strategies in early elementary mathematics. Rather than restarting a count from 1 when adding two quantities (e.g., counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and then 8, 9, 10, 11 to compute 7 + 4), students learn to anchor at the starting quantity (7) and count forward by the added quantity (8, 9, 10, 11).
This game transitions abstract numerical addition into a visual and kinesthetic experience on a one-dimensional coordinate system (the number line):
Spatial Representation of Magnitude: Numbers increase predictably moving left to right.
Additive Displacement: Addition corresponds to forward movement along the axis.
Decomposition of Hops: Each +1 hop visually represents one unit of growth toward the final sum.

Target Grade Levels & Standards Alignment
Grades: Kindergarten – 2nd Grade
Common Core State Standards (CCSS):
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.2: Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.5: Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6: Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.

Learning Objectives
By playing this game, students will:

  1. Identify starting points on a number line without counting up from 0 or 1.
  2. Demonstrate addition fluency by incrementing single-digit and double-digit numbers by +1 steps.
  3. Solve for missing sums (a + b = ?) and missing addends (a + ? = c).
  4. Connect verbal counting sequences to physical distance along a scale.

Teacher’s Guide & Lesson Integration
Classroom Integration Strategies

  1. Whole-Class Warm-Up / Anchor Lesson:
Project the game on an interactive whiteboard during morning math routine. Have the class chorally chant each number as Hopper hops forward (e.g., “Start at 7… hop 8… hop 9… hop 10… land on 11!”).
  2. Small-Group Guided Intervention:
Use the game at a guided math table with physical manipulatives (e.g., unifix cubes or physical number line mats). Have students move a physical token in tandem with Hopper’s movement on screen.
  3. Differentiated Center Progression:
Level 1 (Numbers 1 to 10): Ideal for Kindergarten and early 1st Grade students working on single-digit addition fluency within 10.
Level 2 (Numbers 1 to 20): Designed for 1st Grade students extending addition across the decade boundary (e.g., starting at 9 and hopping 5 to land on 14).
Level 3 (Find the Hop Count): Provides algebraic problem-solving for advanced 1st Grade or 2nd Grade students who must determine the missing addend b in a + b = c.
