Educational Summary
Target Grade Levels: Grades 1–4 (Primary focus: Grades 2 & 3)
Standards Alignment: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.8 — Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately.
Money Master: Coins & Bills Explorer bridges visual currency identification with concrete mental addition and place-value mechanics. By presenting realistic visuals of both coins and paper bills, the game helps students transition from basic skip-counting (5s, 10s, 25s) to fluid decimal-based financial reasoning ($0.01 through $20.00). The dual-mode architecture reinforces both passive recognition (summing given values) and active composition (building specific amounts through visual decomposition).
Teachers’ Guide
Learning Objectives
Identify and recall the values of standard US coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters) and paper bills ($1, $5, $10, $20).
Accurately calculate the total value of mixed currency collections up to $50.00.
Deconstruct numerical amounts into physical currency representations using additive strategies.
Classroom Integration Strategies
Whole-Class Warm-Up: Project the game on a smartboard. Work through 5 rounds of Make Exact Amount together, inviting individual students to suggest which coins or bills to tap first.
Independent Math Centers: Assign students 10–15 minutes of play in Count Total mode during rotation time to build fluency in mental math and skip-counting mixed values.
Formative Assessment Check: Have students record their final score ratio (e.g., 18 / 20) and highest streak on a exit ticket before transitioning to written word problems.
Differentiation Tactics
For Struggling Learners (Scaffolding): Encourage students to use physical play money alongside the digital screen to touch and group tangible coins before selecting an answer. Direct them to start exclusively in Count Total mode.
For Advanced Learners (Extension): Challenge students in Make Exact Amount mode to build target amounts using the fewest possible items (e.g., making $0.85 using 3 quarters and 1 dime rather than 85 pennies).
