Count by Tens Worksheet/Game Quiz/Worksheet
Welcome to Count Tens Worksheet/Game. This game focuses on the core place value skill of unitizing: seeing a group of ten as a single “thing” rather than ten individual pieces. The player must count “bundles” (representing 10) and “loose sticks” (representing 1s) to determine the total value. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to play the Count by Tens Worksheet/Game
Counting by Tens is a “place value” game designed to help you stop counting items one-by-one and start counting in groups of ten.

  1. Choosing Your Mode
On the main menu, you have two ways to visualize numbers:
Count Sticks: Uses bundles of wood. This is great for seeing how 10 individual “ones” physically tie together into one “ten."
Ten Frames: Uses red dots in a 2x5 grid. This is a standard classroom tool that helps you “see” numbers relative to the number 10.

  2. How to Play
Once the game starts, you will see a collection of objects in the display area.
Look for the Groups: Identify how many full Bundles or Ten Frames there are.
Count by Tens: For every full group, count by tens (10, 20, 30…).
Count the “Ones”: Add the remaining loose sticks or dots by counting on by ones (…31, 32, 33).
Submit: Type your answer in the box and click Check.

  3. Mastering the Strategies
    The “Sticks” Strategy
In this mode, the bundles represent the Tens Place and the loose sticks represent the Ones Place.
If you see 4 bundles and 7 sticks, you don’t need to count 1, 2, 3…
Just think: 4 tens is 40, plus 7 is 47.

    The “Ten Frame” Strategy
Ten frames are designed for subitizing—the ability to know a number just by looking at it.
    Full Frame: Always 10.
    Full Top Row: Always 5.
    Empty Frame: 0.

  4. Tips for Success
Use the Keyboard: You can press the Enter key to submit your answer quickly.
Watch the Score: Your score goes up for every correct answer. If you get one wrong, the game will give you feedback so you can try again.
Zero as a Placeholder: If you see 3 bundles but no loose sticks, the answer is 30. The “0” tells us there are no ones.

Teacher’s Guide: Counting Strategy
When using this tool with a student, encourage them to use skip-counting rather than counting every individual stick:

  1. Identify the Bundles: Point to the yellow boxes and count by tens: “10, 20, 30…"
  2. Count On: Switch to counting by ones for the loose brown sticks: “…31, 32, 33."
  3. The Zero Placeholder: If there are bundles but no loose sticks, remind them that the “ones” place must have a 0 (e.g., three bundles is 30).
