Conjunction (And, But, Or) Worksheet/Game
Master 1st-grade connecting words with Connecting Words Quest! Play an interactive phonics & grammar game with audio read-alouds, immediate feedback, and fun challenges for ‘and,’ ‘but,’ and ‘or.’ Featuring read-aloud clues & instant feedback.

How to play

  1. Read or Listen to the Prompt Card
Look at the clue prompt at the top of the card or click the 📢 Read Clue button. The game will read the sentence aloud, pronouncing “blank” where the missing word belongs (e.g., “We saw cats blank dogs at the pet store”).

  2. Check the Clue Symbol
Look for the visual icon in the clue card:
Join two things together (Use AND)
Surprise / Problem change between thoughts (Use BUT)
Choice between two options (Use OR)

  3. Select Your Answer
Click on and, but, or or from the choice buttons below.

  4. Listen to the Sentence & Explanation
Once clicked, the blank fills in, the full sentence is read aloud with the correct answer, and an instant explanation tells you why that word works best.

  5. Earn Points & Complete Quests
Earn +10 points for every correct selection! Each round consists of 10 randomized, non-repeating items pulled from the 20-item question bank.

How is the game useful?

  1. Accessible for Early Readers (Text-to-Speech Integration): By utilizing the Browser Speech API to read sentences with “blank” before an answer is selected and reading the completed sentence after, non-fluent readers can focus on auditory context and sentence flow rather than getting stuck decoding words.

  2. Immediate Corrective Explanations: Instead of simple right/wrong feedback, every response provides a child-friendly explanation reinforcing how the conjunction functions in that specific sentence context.

  3. Spaced Repetition & High Engagement: The randomized 20-question pool guarantees that students get varied, fresh practice across multiple play sessions without repeating items within a single 10-item round.

  4. Low-Distraction Primary Design: Large touch targets, readable fonts (Comic Sans / Round Sans), clear color coding, and subtle Web Audio API chimes keep young learners focused and motivated.
