Compare using Symbols Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Compare using Symbols Worksheet/Game. This game, “Symbol Slider,” helps students transition from using words to using the actual mathematical symbols for comparison: > (Greater Than), < (Less Than), and = (Equal To). Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to Play
Start the Game
Click the START GAME button on the welcome screen. Two random numbers (between 1 and 10) will appear on the left and right sides of the screen.
Choose the Correct Symbol
Look at the numbers and decide which symbol correctly describes their relationship. Click one of the three large buttons at the bottom:
< (Less Than): Use this if the number on the left is smaller than the number on the right.
= (Equal To): Use this if both numbers are exactly the same.
> (Greater Than): Use this if the number on the left is larger than the number on the right.
Get Feedback
Correct: The symbol will turn green and bounce. Your score in the top right will go up, and the game will read the full math sentence to you.
Incorrect: The symbol will turn red, and the game will remind you of the “Alligator Rule” (the mouth always opens toward the bigger number).
Keep Going
Click NEXT PROBLEM ➔ to generate two new numbers. Try to get the highest score possible.
The “Alligator Rule” Tip
If you get confused about which way the symbol points, remember that the symbol is like an alligator’s mouth. The alligator is very hungry, so its mouth always opens wide to “eat” the larger number.
2 < 8: The mouth opens toward the 8.
9 > 4: The mouth opens toward the 9.
Quick Symbol Reference
| Left Number | Right Number | Correct Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 10 | < (5 is less than 10) |
| 7 | 7= | (7 is equal to 7) |
| 6 | 2 | > (6 is greater than 2) |
