Compare Unit Fractions Worksheet/Game
Welcome to the Compare Unit Fractions Challenge! This is an interactive game to help you master the ultimate law of fractions: the more pieces you slice, the smaller they get! By focusing on unit fractions (fractions with a numerator of 1), players build a strong, intuitive understanding of how denominators change a fraction’s actual size. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to Play
Choose Your Training Mode
When the game loads, you will be greeted by the Main Menu. Select the arena mode that best matches your learning style.
Mode 1: With Models – Perfect for beginners! Interactive fraction bars are displayed right next to the numbers for every single duel, letting you visually compare the sizes before making a choice.
Mode 2: Without Models – Ready for a challenge? The fraction bars are completely hidden. You must use mental math and your conceptual knowledge to predict which piece is larger.
Full Arena Adventure – The ultimate training path. The game scaffolds your learning by providing visual models for Duels 1–5, then seamlessly switches to hidden mental mode for Duels 6–10.
Analyze the Duel
Once the game starts, you will see two unit fractions face off on the screen (for example, \(\frac{1}{2}\) versus \(\frac{1}{3}\)
Look closely at the denominators (the bottom numbers).
If your mode includes models, look at the blue (left) and orange (right) fraction bars to see how large the sliced pieces look.
Cast Your Vote
Click one of the three comparison math symbols in the center grid to make your prediction:
< (Less Than): Choose this if you think the left fraction is smaller than the right fraction.
= (Equal To): Choose this if you think both fractions are completely identical in size.
> (Greater Than): Choose this if you think the left fraction is larger than the right fraction.
Read the Feedback and Learn
The moment you click a symbol, the game reveals the correct answer accompanied by a sound effect. Even if you are playing in “Without Models” mode, the game will automatically reveal the visual fraction bars here so you can verify your thinking.
Read the Interactive Explanation at the bottom. It will give you a helpful real-world tip (like comparing pizza slices or sharing food) to reinforce the “Denominator Rule."
Click Next Duel ➔ to move on to the next round.
Claim Your Medal
There are 10 duels in a full match. Keep an eye on your live score tracker at the top left. Once you complete the final round, the arena will calculate your total score and award you a rank:
Score of 10: 👑 Grand Fraction Champion.
Score of 7–9: ⚔️ Elite Arena Gladiator.
Score of 0–6: 🛡️ Apprenticed Knight.
From there, you can jump right back to the Main Menu to challenge yourself on a harder difficulty mode or try to beat your high score.
