Welcome to the Compare Rational Numbers Challenge! In this game, students must compare pairs of rational numbers across different formats (fractions, decimals, and integers) by selecting the correct comparison operator (<, =, or >). How to Play
The game is structured as a 10-stage diagnostics run. Each stage presents a new scenario and a fresh dataset plotted on your dashboard.

  1. Analyze the Core Signal: Each round reveals a brand-new addition or subtraction problem featuring a mixed pair of rational numbers (for instance, a positive decimal added to a negative fraction).

  2. Select Your Input Mode: Look at the numbers and decide your preferred math strategy. If you want to answer with a simplified fraction, choose Fraction Format. If you prefer computing with a point values system, choose Decimal Format. You can flip between these input modes freely while solving.

  3. Utilize the Sandbox Tools: Not sure what a fraction looks like as a decimal? Use the Quick Conversion Scratchpad at the bottom of the panel. Type in any numerator and denominator, hit “Convert,” and use that info to build your master solution strategy.

  4. Submit and Learn: Enter your solution into the active dynamic input slots and click Verify Coordinates. A successful calculation scores you 100 points. Whether you get it right or wrong, the engine instantly unlocks an in-depth, step-by-step math blueprint mapping out exactly how to convert and conquer that specific problem format.

How the Math Works
A rational number is any value that can be written as a clean fraction where both the top (numerator) and bottom (denominator) are whole numbers. Because integers, fractions, and terminating decimals are all part of this same mathematical family, you can use two reliable conversion strategies to solve any problem:

Strategy 1: The Fraction Engine (Exact Representation)
Converting every number into a fraction is a bulletproof strategy because fractions never require you to round off messy numbers.

Handling Whole Integers: Any whole number can be written as a fraction simply by placing it over a denominator of 1. For instance, 4 becomes \(\frac{4}{1}\), and a negative integer like -7 becomes \(\frac{-7}{1}\).

Handling Decimals: Read the decimal out loud using its place-value name. The number 0.6 is read as “six-tenths,” which translates directly to \(\frac{6}{10}\) (and reduces down to \(\frac{3}{5}\)). A mixed decimal value like -1.5 is read as “negative one and five-tenths,” which becomes the improper fraction \(\frac{-15}{10}\) (or \(\frac{-3}{2}\)).

Executing the Problem: Once both numbers are fractions, rewrite them using a common denominator, add or subtract the numerators, and simplify the final result.

Strategy 2: The Decimal Path (Fast and Linear)
If a fraction can be turned into a clean, terminating decimal, switching the entire problem into decimal mode is often much faster for mental math.

Transforming Fractions: Divide the top numerator by the bottom denominator. For example, if the system hands you \(\frac{3}{4}\), calculating 3 ÷ 4 gives you an exact decimal value of 0.75.

Executing the Problem: Line up your decimal points neatly and perform standard addition or subtraction. Just keep a close eye on your integer signs, remembering foundational properties like how subtracting a negative value (e.g., - (-0.5)) flips the operation into adding a positive (+ 0.5).
