Compare Mixed Numbers Worksheet/Game
Welcome to the Compare Mixed Numbers Challenge! This is an interactive game to help you master the concept of comparing mixed numbers: compare the whole numbers first and then compare the fractions. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play
Step 1: Select Your Equipment Mode
Choose how you want to start your climb from the Main Menu:
Mode 1: With Visual Models – Displays interactive circular pie models next to both mixed numbers. You can count the full colored circles and track the exact slice distributions visually.

Mode 2: Without Models – Covers the mountain in fog. The circular visual models are completely hidden until after you make a choice, requiring you to analyze the digits purely in your head.

Full Mountain Adventure – The ultimate challenge path. Provides clear skies and full visuals for Quests 1–5, then rolls the fog in for a pure mental calculation climb across Quests 6–10.

Step 2: Apply the Golden Mountain Rule
When comparing two mixed numbers (like \(3\frac{1}{4}\) vs \(2\frac{7}{8})\), always evaluate your targets in this exact sequence:

  1. Check the Whole Numbers: Look at the large integers. Since 3 whole units are automatically larger than 2 whole units, \(3\frac{1}{4} \) is instantly greater than \(2\frac{7}{8}\). You don’t even need to look at the fractions.
  2. Check the Fractions: If the whole numbers are identical (like \(2\frac{1}{3}\) vs \(2\frac{1}{4}\)), the whole number baseline cancels out. Focus your attention entirely on the fractions and determine which fractional slice is larger.

Step 3: Plant Your Flag & Learn
Click one of the relation buttons (<, =, or >) to lock in your answer:
Correct Evaluations: The central token glows green, a positive chime triggers, and you gain an expedition point.
Missteps: The token turns red, the correct operator bounces to capture your eye, and a specialized breakdown box explains whether you made a whole-number sorting error or a fractional scale oversight.
If you are playing a hidden round, the mountain fog instantly clears to show you the circular pies so you can visually verify why the right answer is correct.

Reach the top of the 10th peak to secure your tracking stats and claim your ultimate title: 👑 Grand Mountain Emperor.
