Compare the Groups Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Compare the Groups Worksheet/Game. This game focuses on Number Sense and Relative Magnitude. By comparing two distinct groups of objects, students learn to quantify collections and apply mathematical vocabulary like “More,” “Less,” or “Equal” without necessarily needing to count to high numbers first. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
Game Objective
The goal is to compare the number of items in two different boxes and decide which box has a higher quantity (More) or if they have the exact same amount (The Same).
How to play the Compare the Groups Worksheet/Game
Look at the Boxes: You will see two boxes filled with icons (like apples or stars).
Compare: Quickly look at both sides. You don’t always have to count every single one; sometimes you can see which group looks “bigger” or “fuller."
Choose a Button:
Tap “Left is More” if the left box has more items.
Tap “Right is More” if the right box has more items.
Tap “Same” if both boxes have the exact same number of items.
Listen and Learn: The game will tell you if you’re correct and then give you a new pair of groups to compare!
Educational Strategy: Subitizing and Comparison
Subitizing: For smaller groups (1–4), students learn to recognize the quantity instantly without counting.
Visual Estimation: For larger groups, students develop the ability to estimate which area is more densely packed.
Vocabulary Reinforcement: Using the terms “More,” “Less,” and “Same” builds the linguistic foundation for later inequality symbols (> , < , and =).
