Compare Decimals Grid Game
Help Grade 4 students master comparing decimals to hundredths. Decimal Safari uses visual 10x10 grids and place-value feedback to eliminate common decimal misconceptions. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game

  1. Examine the Decimals & Visual Grids: Observe the two decimal numbers displayed in the colored boxes. Each box features an optional 10x10 grid where each individual shaded square represents 1 hundredth (0.01).

  2. Compare Place Values: Check the tenths place (full 10-block columns) first, then the hundredths place (individual single squares), or compare total shaded areas across both grids.

  3. Choose the Inequality Symbol: Click the button matching the correct relationship:
< (Less Than) if the left decimal is smaller than the right decimal.
= (Equal To) if both decimals express the exact same value.

(Greater Than) if the left decimal is larger than the right decimal.

  1. Review Feedback & Advance: Read the place-value explanation that appears after every choice, build your score streak, and click Next Challenge. Toggle the visual grids off whenever you’re ready for a mental-math challenge!

Educational Summary
Decimal Grid is built specifically for Grade 4 math standards (CCSS 4.NF.C.7) to address “whole-number bias”—the common misconception where students assume a longer digit string means a larger number (e.g., believing 0.38 is greater than 0.4 because 38 > 4).

By pairing numerical expressions directly with dual 10x10 area models and automated place-value rationale, the game shifts student strategy from counting overall digits to analyzing column weight by place value.

Target Grade Level: 4th Grade (suitable for 5th Grade review or 3rd Grade extension)
Target Math Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.C.7 (Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size)
Core Competencies Developed:
Visualizing decimals as fractional parts of a 100-grid whole.
Comparing tenths against hundredths (0.4 vs 0.38).
Recognizing equivalent decimal forms (0.5 = 0.50).
Applying step-by-step place-value priority (comparing tenths before hundredths).

Teacher’s Guide
Classroom Implementation Ideas
Whole-Class Warm-Up (5–10 Mins): Project the game onto a smartboard. Hide the visual grids using the toggle button and ask students to show their choice (<, >, =) using hand signals or personal whiteboards before revealing the grids and checking the answer together.
Differentiated Math Centers:
Scaffolded Mode: Keep visual grids ON so visual learners can physically count shaded columns and individual blocks.
Extension Mode: Turn visual grids OFF to push students to rely strictly on place-value reasoning.
Targeted Small-Group Intervention: Use 1-on-1 with students who struggle with decimal comparison. Focus on the automated place-value explanation to reinforce that 4 full columns (0.40) contain more area than 3 full columns and 8 blocks (0.38).

Discussion Prompts
“Why is 0.4 larger than 0.38 even though 38 is bigger than 4?"
“How many full columns need to be shaded on a 10x10 grid to equal 0.1? How many individual squares equal 0.01?"
“If both numbers have a 5 in the tenths place, what place value do we look at next to break the tie?"
