The Core Concept
The prefix “co-” in cosine, cotangent, and cosecant stands directly for complementary. In any right-angled triangle, the two acute angles must sum up to 90°. If one angle is θ, the remaining angle is automatically 90° - θ.
Because the opposite side of one acute angle is the adjacent side of the other, the trigonometric functions of these angles share equivalent ratios:
sin(θ) = cos(90° - θ)
tan(θ) = cot(90° - θ)
sec(θ) = csc(90° - θ)
