Calculate Box Plot Game
Master middle school statistics with Box Plot Pilot! Practice finding the 5-number summary (Minimum, Q1, Median, Q3, Maximum) and calculating Interquartile Range (IQR) from datasets and visual plots. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
 


 

How to Play the Game

  1. Select a Mission Module: Choose a focus area from the main menu:
    Module 01: Read the Plot – Identify summary statistics directly from visual Box-and-Whisker plots on a number line.
    Module 02: 5-Number Summary from Data – Analyze raw, unsorted numerical datasets to find specified summary values.
    Module 03: Interquartile Range (IQR) Master – Calculate middle-50% spread using the formula IQR = Q3 - Q1.
  2. Examine the Target Protocol: Check the prompt card to identify which statistic you need to solve for (Minimum, Lower Quartile Q1, Median, Upper Quartile Q3, Maximum, or Interquartile Range).
  3. Analyze the Data Source:
    For visual questions, locate key plot markers: left whisker endpoint (Min), left box edge (Q1), middle line (Median), right box edge (Q3), and right whisker endpoint (Max).
    For dataset questions, order numbers from least to greatest and find the median of the whole set and lower/upper halves.
  4. Select Your Answer: Click one of the four multiple-choice options on the right-side control panel.

The game addresses three critical statistical competencies:

Visual Data Decoding: Reading box-and-whisker plots accurately by identifying five key positional boundaries along a scaled number line.
Data Set Division & Quartile Calculation: Structuring raw numerical data, finding the median (Q2), and isolating the middle values of lower and upper halves to determine Q1 and Q3.
Measures of Variability (IQR): Understanding Interquartile Range (IQR = Q3 - Q1) as a robust measure of spread that represents the range of the middle 50% of data, reducing the influence of extreme values and outliers.

Target Audience: Grade 6–8 Mathematics, Introductory Algebra 1 / High School Statistics.Common Core State Standards (CCSS):
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.SP.B.5.C: Giving quantitative measures of center (median and/or mean) and variability (interquartile range and/or mean absolute deviation), as well as describing any overall pattern.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSS.ID.A.1: Represent data with plots on the real number line (dot plots, histograms, and box plots).

Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:

  1. Identify the 5 key components of a box-and-whisker plot: Minimum, Q1, Median, Q3, and Maximum.
  2. Determine quartiles from both odd and even ordered datasets.
  3. Apply the Interquartile Range formula (IQR = Q3 - Q1) to quantify data dispersion.
  4. Interpret visual number line scales to read non-explicitly labeled values between major tick marks.

Supply a laminated “5-Finger Summary” reference card matching the visual layout of a box plot:

Have students start on Module 01 to solidify spatial associations before adding manual dataset calculations.

For Advanced Learners (Extension): Ask students to construct a matching dot plot or stem-and-leaf plot from datasets generated in Module 02, or challenge them to calculate whether any values in the generated datasets qualify as formal mathematical outliers using the 1.5 × IQR rule.
