How to Play Beginning Blend Game
Objective
Help your young readers build strong decoding skills! The goal is to listen to the target word and identify the correct beginning blend (bl, cl, gl, or sl) that completes its spelling.

Gameplay Steps

1. Listen to the Secret Word:
   Listen closely to the audio clip.
   When a new round starts, the game will automatically say the secret word out loud (make sure your speakers are on!). If you miss it or want to hear it again, simply tap the audio button (🔊).
   

2. Examine the Word Frame:
   Look at the missing word parts.
   Look at the screen to see the ending of the word (for example, __ue or __ock). The starting letters are missing!
   

3. Select the Starting Blend:
   Pick from the 4 blend options.
   Look at the four large buttons at the bottom: bl, cl, gl, and sl. Click the blend that matches the opening sound you heard.
   

4. Check the Spelling:
   Instant phonetic feedback.The game will immediately reveal your results:
   Green Success: The full word is revealed in the frame, and your score updates!
   Red Alert: The game highlights the correct option so you can connect the spelling to the sound.
   A friendly, tailored explanation will pop up at the bottom to reinforce exactly how those two consonants mix together.
   

5. Advance to Master the Lab:
   Complete all 12 rounds.
   Click “Next Challenge ➔” to progress. The game cycles through 12 distinct words randomly once before repeating, giving students a balanced exposure to all four blends. Try to get a perfect score!

Consonant Blends
In phonics, a consonant blend (also known as a consonant cluster) is when two or more consonants are grouped together in a word, and each individual sound can still be heard when you say the word.

Blends vs. Digraphs
It is very common to confuse blends with digraphs, but they are fundamentally different:
Consonant Blend: You hear both sounds. (e.g., In clap, you clearly hear the /k/ and the /l/).
Consonant Digraph: Two letters team up to make a completely new sound. (e.g., In ship, you don’t hear an “s” or an “h”—they completely merge into /ʃ/).

The Main Categories of Initial Blends
Beginning consonant blends are usually grouped by their second letter. The most common groups are L-Blends, R-Blends, and S-Blends.

1. The L-Blends
   These blends pair an initial consonant smoothly with the letter L.
   bl- → blue, block, blanket
   cl- → clock, clap, clown
   fl- → flag, fly, flute
   gl- → glass, glove, glue
   pl- → plane, plug, plant
   sl- → slide, sleep, slow
   

2. The R-Blends
   These blends drive right into the letter R, requiring speakers to position their tongues quickly for the transition.
   br- → brown, brick, brush
   cr- → crab, cry, crayon
   dr- → drum, dress, drop
   fr- → frog, friend, frame
   gr- → green, grass, grape
   pr- → prize, principals, press
   tr- → tree, truck, train
   

3. The S-Blends
   The letter S loves to join forces with both consonants and other blends. It creates a distinct hissing start before striking the next sound.
   sc- / sk- → scooter, skate, sky
   sm- → smile, smell, smart
   sn- → snake, snail, snack
   sp- → spider, spoon, space
   st- → star, stop, stand
   sw- → swim, swing, sweater
   

Final Blends (Ending Clusters)
Blends don’t just show up at the start of words—they frequently land at the very end of words, too!

-nk	pink, sink, tank
-st	fest, best, last

Teaching Tip: “Stretching the Sound” When helping early readers decode a blend, encourage them to “stretch” the sounds out like a rubber band instead of chopping them up.Instead of saying /b/ … /l/ … /u/ separately, guide them to slide the consonants together smoothly: bbblllue. This sensory audio feedback loop prevents them from accidentally omitting the second letter (like writing “bue” instead of “blue”), which is one of the most common early spelling hurdles!
