This Array Multiplication Game/Worksheet is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
Array Multiplication Quiz/Game
This game focuses on the visual structure of multiplication. Students must look at a grid (an array) and identify the correct multiplication formula based on the number of Rows and Columns. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to play the Array Multiplication Game
The Blueprint (The Grid)
When you start the game, you will see a yellow grid of boxes in the center of the screen. This is your Array. To find the correct answer, you need to “measure” the grid using two dimensions:
Rows (The Horizontal Count): Count how many boxes are stacked from top to bottom along the left side. Think of these as the “floors” of a building.
Columns (The Vertical Count): Count how many boxes are lined up from left to right across the top. Think of these as the “rooms” on each floor.
Identifying the Formula
Once you have your numbers, look at the options below. A multiplication formula is written as:
Rows × Columns
For example, if you see 3 rows and 5 columns, you are looking for the card that says 3 × 5.
Using the Commutative Property
This game recognizes the Commutative Property, which means the order of the numbers doesn’t change the total number of boxes.
If the grid has 2 rows and 4 columns, the “standard” answer is 2 × 4.
However, if you see a card that says 4 × 2, that is also correct. It just means you are looking at the grid as 4 columns of 2 instead of 2 rows of 4.
Scoring and Sound
Success: If you pick the right formula, you’ll hear a bright, musical chord, and the feedback will say “Correct”
Correction: If you pick the wrong one, a low tone will play. Double-check your count! Did you accidentally count an extra row?
