Area by Counting Squares Worksheet/Game
Welcome to the Area by Counting Squares Challenge! This game is an excellent way to practice Area, which is the total space inside a 2D shape. In this challenge, players calculate area by counting unit squares or using multiplication for rectangular sections. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to Play
The goal is to determine the total area of the pink shape shown on the grid. Since area is the amount of space a flat surface takes up, follow these steps to find the answer:
Count the Squares: Look at the 5 × 5 grid. Count every pink unit square you see. Because the squares are always connected, you can easily track your progress by counting from one end of the shape to the other.
Enter Your Answer: Type the total number into the input box labeled with a question mark.
Check Your Work: Click the Check Answer button or press Enter.
Correct: You’ll hear a rising chime and see a star-filled message. Your score streak will increase.
Incorrect: You’ll hear a low tone, and the game will reveal the actual area so you can learn for the next round. Note that an incorrect answer resets your score to zero.
Keep Growing: Click Next Shape to generate a brand-new, randomly designed figure and keep your streak alive.
Expert Counting Tips
If the shape looks complex, try “Chunking.” Instead of counting one by one, look for small groups—like a 2 × 2 block of four squares—and add them together. This is a great way to transition from basic counting to using multiplication for area.
