Welcome to the Addition & Subtraction Terms Challenge! Every addition and subtraction equation is made up of parts with unique “names. Learning these terms—like Sum, Difference, Minuend, and Addend—helps you speak the language of mathematicians and explain exactly how you solved a problem. This game is designed to help you memorize these terms through fun, interactive practice. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

 

 

How to Play

1. Analyze the Equation:
   Look at the large math problem displayed in the center of the screen.
   

2. Identify the Highlight:
   One specific number in the equation will be highlighted with a yellow background.
   

3. Choose the Name:
   Look at the grid of buttons below. Click the button that represents the correct mathematical name for that highlighted number.
   Addition (+): Look for terms like Addend or Sum.
   Subtraction (-): Look for terms like Minuend, Subtrahend, or Difference.
   

4. Listen and Learn:
   A high-pitched “ding” means you got it right. The button will turn green.
   A lower tone means “oops!"—the button will turn red, and you can try again.
   

5. Keep Practicing:
   Once you find the correct answer, click the Next Problem ➔ button to generate a brand-new equation and continue your training.
