Add/Subtract Scientific Notation Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Add/Subtract Scientific Notation Worksheet/Game. This game is designed to help you master adding and subtracting numbers in scientific notation. Since you can only add or subtract these numbers when their exponents match, the game guides you through that exact workflow. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to play the Add/Subtract Scientific Notation Game
Phase 1: The Conversion (Match the Exponents)
When the round starts, you will see two values (A and B) with different exponents.
Before you can add or subtract the two numbers, you need to make their exponents the same.

  1. Look at Value A: Note its exponent (e.g., 103).
  2. Adjust Value B: Your goal is to change Value B so it has the same exponent as Value A without changing its actual value.
To increase the exponent: Move the decimal point in the coefficient to the left (e.g., 15.0 × 102 becomes 1.5 × 103).
To decrease the exponent: Move the decimal point in the coefficient to the right (e.g., 1.5 × 103 becomes 15.0 × 102).
  3. Enter the data: Type the new coefficient and the matching exponent into the boxes and click Verify Conversion.

Phase 2: The Solution (Combine Coefficients)
Once Step 1 is verified, the display for Value B will update to show your converted version. Now that the powers of 10 match, you can ignore them and focus on the coefficients.

  1. Check the Operator: Look at the sign between the values (+ or -).
  2. Do the Math: Add or subtract the two coefficients.Example: (4.2 × 103) + (1.5 × 103) → 4.2 + 1.5 = 5.7.
  3. Enter the Result: Type your final number into the box and click Compute Result.
