Add & Subtract Integer Word Problems Game/Worksheet
Welcome to the Add & Subtract Integer Word Problems Challenge! This game contextualizes adding and subtracting integers through real-world scenarios that middle school students naturally understand: elevation changes, bank account deposits/overdrafts, temperature shifts, and sports scores. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play
Your journey through Integer Town consists of a targeted runtime performance tracking 10 randomized word problems.

Analyze the Narrative: Read the situation displayed in the central terminal carefully. Identify the starting number, note its initial polarity, and look for directional trigger words.

Input Your Solution: Type your final integer value into the input block. Because mobile devices can occasionally hide math symbols on standard phone dials, the system uses a text input mode. If your solution drops below zero, remember to manually type a minus sign (-) right before your digits.

Process the Analytical Feedback: Press the Submit node or press the Enter key. If your value is correct, you earn 10 points and hear a harmonic audio chime. If there is a calculation mismatch, a low frequency tone sounds and an adaptive feedback panel pops up to break down the problem step-by-step using number line logic.

Complete the Inspection: Use the Continue Journey action node to advance through the queue. Once all 10 story tracks are evaluated, the dashboard summarizes your final score and offers an appraisal of your word-problem translation skills.

How the Math Works

  1. Directional Shifts and Operation Triggers
Every real-world scenario uses specific keywords that indicate whether a value is positive or negative, or whether an operation adds or subtracts:
Positive Benchmarks & Moves: Keywords like deposit, rise, gain, or above sea level represent positive positions or rightward/upward shifts.
Negative Benchmarks & Moves: Keywords like debt, drop, loss, or below sea level represent negative positions or leftward/downward shifts.

  2. Core Scenario Frameworks
The game shifts between three primary mathematical configurations:

Mathematical Action Structural Meaning Real-World Example
Combining Same-Sign Moving further in the same direction, which increases the absolute value while keeping the original sign. Starting with an overdraft fee of -18 and spending another $25 pushes you deeper into debt: -18 - 25 = -43.
Combining Opposing Numbers Moving in opposite directions, where the final sign is determined by whichever number has the larger magnitude. A freezing morning at -12° that warms up by 22° crosses zero into positive territory: -12 + 22 = 10.
Finding the Difference Calculating the total interval distance separating two distinct positions on the line. Finding the gap between a hallway at 72° and a freezer at -5° requires subtracting the lower limit from the upper limit: 72 - (-5) = 77.
  3. The Mechanics of the Double Negative
When calculating differences between positive and negative values, you will frequently encounter a double negative. Subtracting a negative integer is logically equivalent to adding its positive inverse:
    a - (-b) = a + b
In terms of a physical story, removing a penalty or finding the distance down to a value below zero inherently adds to the total value or distance. For instance, finding the distance between a bird 60 feet up and a fish 15 feet down translates to 60 - (-15), which simplifies directly to 60 + 15 = 75 feet of separation.
