Add & Subtract Function Game (Evaluate)
This game will require you to evaluate two functions given the input value and either add or subtract the results. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.

How to Play the Add & Subtract Function Game (Evaluate)

  1. Identify Your Two Functions
At the top of the card, you’ll see two separate equations:
    f(x) (Indigo): Your first rule.
    g(x) (Emerald): Your second rule.

  2. Check the Operation & Input
Look at the large white text in the center and the Target Input box:
    (f + g)(x): Means “Add the results of f and g together."
(f - g)(x): Means “Subtract the result of g from the result of f."
Target Input (x = ?): This is the specific number you plug into both equations.

  3. The Strategy (3 Steps)
    To solve a problem like f(x) = x + 2, g(x) = 2x, and (f + g)(3):
Step 1: Solve or Evaluate f(x)
Plug your Target Input into the first equation.
    If x = 3, then f(3) = 3 + 2 = 5.

Step 2: Solve or Evaluate g(x)
Plug the same Target Input into the second equation.
If x = 3, then g(3) = 2(3) = 6.

Step 3: Combine them
Perform the operation shown in the middle of the screen.
Since it’s (f + g), calculate 5 + 6 = 11.
(If it were f - g, you would do 5 - 6 = -1).

  1. Tips
Watch for Absolute Value: |x - 5| means you solve the inside first, then make the result positive.
The Negative Trap: If the operation is subtraction and g(x) is a negative number, remember that subtracting a negative is addition (e.g., 10 - (-5) = 15).

This video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to add & subtract functions (evaluate).
