Add m and cm Game
This Add m and cm Game is an interactive math game designed to help you practice adding mixed units of length: meters (m) and centimeters (cm). The challenge lies in knowing when to “bundle” your centimeters into a full meter. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the Add m and cm Game
Observe the Measurements
The game presents you with two lengths to add together. Each length is split into two columns:
Meters: The larger unit.
Centimeters: The smaller unit.
Add the Centimeters First
Start by adding the numbers in the cm column.
The Rule: 100 cm = 1 meter.
If your total is less than 100, write it in the cm box.
If your total is 100 or more, you must regroup. Keep the “leftover” centimeters in the cm box and carry 1 over to the meters.
Add the Meters
Add the two meter numbers together, and don’t forget to add the 1 you carried over if your centimeters total was 100 or higher.
Check Your Work
Enter your final totals into the input boxes and click “Check Total.”
Example
Let’s say the game gives you:
Length 1: 4m 70cm
Length 2: 2m 50cm
Step 1: Add the centimeters
70 + 50 = 120cm
Step 2: Regroup
Since 120 is more than 100, we take 100cm away to make 1 meter.
We are left with 20cm.
Step 3: Add the meters
4 m (Length 1) + 2 m (Length 2) + 1 m (Carry over) = 7 m
Final Answer to type in: 7m and 20cm.
This video gives a clear, step-by-step approach on understanding adding mixed units of m and cm.
