How to Play the Game

  1. Start from the Main Menu: Choose your preferred difficulty level (Easy, Medium, or Hard) and click Start Game.
  2. Read the Measurement Problem: A math problem will appear asking you to add two (or three) measurement values given in feet (’ or ft) and inches (’’ or in).
  3. Calculate Your Answer: Add the inches together first. Remember that every 12 inches equals 1 foot. Add any extra feet to your total feet sum.
  4. Enter Your Solution: Type your final answer into the Feet and Inches input boxes.
  5. Submit & Review: Click Submit Answer (or press Enter). You will hear audio feedback (a cheerful chime for correct answers or a gentle tone for incorrect ones) and see a step-by-step breakdown of how the solution was calculated.

Educational Summary
The Adding Feet and Inches Game transforms a notoriously tricky customary measurement concept into an engaging, self-paced learning experience. In standard decimal math, carrying over occurs in base-10 (10 units = 1 ten). Measurement addition, however, operates on mixed bases—specifically base-12 for inches to feet (12 inches} = 1 foot}).

This game reinforces foundational mathematics standards by targeting:
Base-12 Conversion Fluency: Helping students recognize when inches equal or exceed 12 and successfully carrying over the surplus into the feet column.
Multi-Step Problem Solving: Requiring learners to handle two distinct units simultaneously without losing track of partial sums.
Immediate Formative Feedback: Providing visual step-by-step explanations right after an attempt so students learn why an error occurred rather than just seeing a red cross.
Metacognition & Accuracy Tracking: Keeping live tallies of correct attempts, accuracy percentages, and active streaks encourages growth mindsets and self-correction.

Teachers’ Guide & Classroom Implementation
Curriculum Alignment
Common Core Standards (CCSS):
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.A.2: Use the four operations to solve word problems involving intervals of time, money, distances, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.A.1: Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 ft} to 60 in}).

Suggested Classroom Uses
Warm-Up / Bell Ringer (5–10 Minutes): Have students play one round of Medium difficulty at the start of a geometry or measurement block to activate prior knowledge regarding unit conversions.
Math Stations / Rotation Centers: Ideal for independent iPad or Chromebook rotation centers where students can race their own high scores or work collaboratively to solve Hard-mode multi-term additions.

Differentiation:
Struggling Learners: Start on Easy mode where inch sums naturally stay below 12, easing cognitive load before introducing carry-overs.
Advanced Learners: Challenge students to use Hard mode and finish 10 questions with 100% accuracy, or have them write out the paper scratch-work before typing their inputs.
