Add cm and mm Game
This Add cm and mm Game is an interactive math game designed to help you practice adding mixed units of length: centimeters (cm) and millimeters (mm). The challenge lies in knowing when to “bundle” your millimeters into a centimeter. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the Add cm and mm Game
Read the Measurements
The game displays two precise lengths.
Centimeters (cm): These are the larger numbers you see on a standard ruler.
Millimeters (mm): These are the tiny little lines between the centimeters.
The Rule: The Power of 10
The most important thing to remember is the conversion rate:
10 mm = 1 cm
Add the Millimeters First
Always start with the smallest unit. Add the two mm numbers together.
If the total is 9 or less, just type it in the mm box.
If the total is 10 or more, you must regroup.
Regroup (Carry Over)
If your millimeters hit 10, they “level up” to become a centimeter.
Example: If you add 8 mm + 7 mm, you get 15 mm.
You keep the 5 mm in the millimeter box and carry over 1 cm to the next column.
Add the Centimeters
Add the two cm numbers from the problem, plus the 1 cm you carried over from your millimeter addition.
Example
Imagine the game gives you these two lengths:
Length A: 5 cm 8 mm
Length B: 3 cm 4 mm
Step 1: Add the mm8 mm + 4 mm = 12 mm.
Step 2: Regroup
Since 12 is more than 10, we have 1 cm and 2 mm.
Step 3: Add the cm
5 cm (A) + 3 cm (B) + 1 cm (carry) = 9 cm.
Final Answer: 9 cm 2 mm.
This video gives a clear, step-by-step approach on understanding adding mixed units of cm and mm.
