Absolute Value Functions Game
Master graphing absolute value functions! Practice finding vertices, determining direction and stretch factors, and plotting graphs (y = a|x - h| + k) with step-by-step solutions. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game

  1. Review the Equation: Read the given equation displayed at the top in vertex form (y = a|x - h| + k).
  2. Identify the Parameters:
Vertex (h, k): Input the x and y coordinates for the vertex.
Opening Direction: Select whether the graph opens Up (a > 0) or Down (a < 0).
Stretch Factor (a): Enter the vertical stretch/compression factor magnitude.
  3. Plot the Graph: Click or tap on the interactive coordinate grid to set the vertex point, then adjust the slope/stretch point to draw the V-shaped graph.
  4. Submit & Review: Click Submit Answer to check your work.
Listen for the audio feedback (chime for correct, buzz for incorrect).
Review the step-by-step breakdown. If incorrect, the correct green solution graph is shown overlaid on your submission.
  5. Track Your Score: Watch your progress update in real-time as Number Correct / Number Attempted. Use the Main Menu button anytime to return to the game selection hub.

Educational Summary
This interactive learning tool transforms abstract algebraic transformations into a tactile, visual experience. By focusing on the vertex form of absolute value functions (f(x) = a|x - h| + k), the game reinforces core conceptual linkages:

  • The Vertex (h, k): Reinforces horizontal shifts (opposite of the sign inside the absolute value) and vertical shifts.
  • The Direction Parameter (a): Connects the sign of the leading coefficient to vertical reflections across the x-axis.
  • The Stretch Factor (|a|): Teaches students how the slope of the absolute value rays changes relative to the parent function y = |x|.
  • Instant Formative Feedback: Immediate corrective feedback combined with visual graph overlays helps students quickly correct misconceptions about domain, range, and rigid transformations.

Teacher’s Guide & Implementation Strategy
Curriculum Alignment
Common Core Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.BF.B.3 (Identify the effect on the graph of replacing f(x) by f(x) + k, f(kx), etc.)
Topic: Algebra 1 / Algebra 2 / Precalculus (Absolute Value Equations and Transformations).

Classroom Integration Ideas

  1. Warm-Up / Bellringer: Project the game on a smartboard for the first 5 minutes of class. Have students write down their answers on whiteboards before a volunteer inputs them on the screen.
  2. Station Rotation: Use as an independent digital station during blended learning units on piecewise and absolute value functions.
  3. Error Analysis Activity: Have students intentionally submit incorrect answers and analyze why the green solution overlay differs from their blue plotted graph, focusing specifically on sign errors inside the absolute value brackets (e.g., confusing x - 3 as shifting left instead of right).
  4. Formative Assessment: Set a goal for students to achieve a target score ratio (e.g., 10/10 or 8/10) to gauge individual mastery before moving on to absolute value inequalities or piece-wise functions.
