2 Variable Equations Game/Worksheet
Welcome to the 2 Variable Equations Challenge! This is an interactive math game designed to test and sharpen your mental algebra and equation-solving skills. Your job is to test pairs of numbers and decide if they fit perfectly onto different linear mathematical equations. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play

  1. Set Up Your Mission: On the main menu, choose whether you want sound effects turned on and decide if you want to challenge yourself with a 60-Second Blitz Timer. Click Initialize Screen to begin.

  2. Read the Screen: For each of the 10 data nodes, you will be shown a coordinate point, like (2, 5), and a rule called an equation, like y = x + 3.

  3. Make Your Choice:
Click YES (True) if you think the point fits the equation’s rule.
Click NO (False) if you think the numbers don’t match up.

  4. Review and Advance:
After you guess, an overlay will pop up with a step-by-step breakdown. Read it to see why you were right or wrong, then click Advance to Next Node. Each correct answer adds 100 points to your score balance

How the Math Works
The math in this game is all about substitution—which just means plugging numbers into spaces left by letters.

Every coordinate point is an ordered pair written as (x, y).
The first number is always x.
The second number is always y.
To see if a coordinate satisfies an equation, you plug the x-number into the x spot, plug the y-number into the y spot, and see if both sides of the equal sign match.

Let’s Look at the Tiers:
Tier 1: Basic Operations
These involve simple addition or subtraction.
Example: Point (3, 7) and the equation y = x + 4.
The Math: We replace y with 7 and x with 3. The equation becomes 7 = 3 + 4. Since 3 + 4 is 7, both sides are equal (7 = 7). This is True (YES).

Tier 2: Linear Coefficients
These add a coefficient, which is a number glued to the front of x. In algebra, when a number is right next to a letter, it means you multiply them.
Example: Point (4, 9) and the equation y = 2x + 1.
The Math: Replace y with 9 and x with 4. Remember to multiply first: 2 \times 4 = 8. Then add 1: 8 + 1 = 9. The equation simplifies to 9 = 9. This is True (YES).

Tier 3: Form Variations
These equations shuffle things around or use negative numbers. You have to be careful with your negative signs here.
Example: Point (2, -1) and the equation 4x + 2y = 8.
The Math: Plug in 2 for x and -1 for y.
4(2) + 2(-1) = 8
8 + (-2) = 8
6 = 8
Since 6 does not equal 8, this coordinate does not fit. This is False (NO).

Does (x, y) Satisfy the Linear Equation?
