This 1-Step Equation Game/Worksheet is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
1-Step Equation Game
In this 1-Step Equation Game, you are training to solve algebraic equations with integers. The game is split into four levels, each testing a different way to think about the “balance” of an equation. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the 1-Step Equation Game
Level 1: Standard (x + 5 = 12)
This is the classic “Inverse Operation” level. You want to get x alone by doing the opposite of the number next to it.
If you see a plus sign (+), you need to subtract: x + 5 = 12 → subtract 5 from 12. (x = 7)
If you see a minus sign (-), you need to add: x - 3 = -10 → add 3 to -10. (x = -7)
Level 2: Flipped (12 = x + 5)
This level tests your comfort with the equals sign. Remember: an equation is a balance scale. It doesn’t matter if x is on the left or the right; the math remains the same.
Strategy: Just ignore the flip and solve it like Level 1. 12 = x + 5 is the same as x + 5 = 12.
Level 3: Subtracted Variable (10 - x = 15)
This is the “Boss Level” of logic. You aren’t adding to x; you are subtracting x from something.
The “Swap” Trick: You can swap the x and the result to solve it instantly.
Example: 10 - x = 15 becomes 10 - 15 = x.
Math: 10 - 15 = -5. So, x = -5.
Level 4: Mixed Mode
The game will randomly give you Level 1, 2, or 3 problems. You have to identify the “type” of problem before you start calculating.
Tips for Solving
The “Inverse Operations”
To solve the equation, you must “undo” the math. Think of it like a scale that must stay balanced. Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other.
Example 1 (Addition):
x + 10 = 2
Opposite: Subtract 10 from both sides.
Math: 2 - 10 = -8
Answer: x = -8
Example 2 (Subtraction):
x - 7 = -5
Opposite: Add 7 to both sides.
Math: -5 + 7 = 2
Answer: x = 2
How to Solve Integer Equations
To find x, you have to get it alone by doing the opposite of what is currently happening to it.
