The distributive property can be a useful strategy for finding related multiplication facts by breaking down larger or more difficult multiplication problems into simpler, smaller ones that are easier to solve. This helps students see connections between facts they already know and new ones.
How It Works:
The distributive property states:
𝑎 × (𝑏 + 𝑐) = (𝑎 × 𝑏) + (𝑎 × 𝑐)
This means you can break a larger number into parts, multiply each part by the other factor, and then add the results.
Example: Using Known Facts to Solve New Ones
Problem: Find 6×7 using the distributive property and related facts.
Solution:
Step 1: Break 7 into smaller, known facts: 7 = 5 + 2
Step 2: Use the distributive property: 6 × 7 = 6 × (5 + 2) = (6 × 5) + (6 × 2)
Step 3: Calculate each part: 6 × 5 = 30 and 6 × 2 = 12
Step 4: Add the two products together: 30 + 12 = 42
So, 6 × 7 = 42
The distributive property helps students break down multiplication problems into smaller, known facts. This strategy allows them to solve more complex multiplication problems by using simpler ones they already know.
