Free printable and online math worksheets to help students learn how to solve measurement word problems.

Read carefully and understand the problem thoroughly. Identify what you need to find (e.g., total distance, remaining volume, etc.). Highlight key information like measurements, units, and any actions mentioned (e.g., adding, subtracting, filling, etc.).
Look for numbers representing measurements and any relationships between them (e.g., one container holds twice as much as another).
Set up tape diagrams or equations to help you visualize the relationships and represent the problem. This can clarify the operations needed.
Based on the keywords and the situation described, select the appropriate operation needed to solve the problem:
Addition: To find the total quantity when combining measurements from different objects.
Subtraction: To find the remaining quantity after some is used or removed.
Multiplication: To find the total quantity by multiplying a unit price or rate by a number of units.
Division: To find the unit price or rate when you have the total quantity and the number of units.
Pay close attention to the units used in the problem (e.g., centimeters, feet, gallons, liters). Check if all measurements have the same unit. If not, convert one or both measurements to a common unit before performing calculations. Use conversion factors or formulas as needed.
